Barry Russell

Position: Head Coach

Coach Barry Russell is beginning his 30th year of coaching, 18 of which, have been at the helm, of the Midland High School baseball program. The Bulldogs have made the playoffs for 16 consecutive years. Under his guidance, Midland High has had 12 straight seasons with 23 or more wins -- including owning all or part of the District Championships in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, and 2013. The three consecutive championships is a Midland High record in baseball. The Bulldogs were the 5A State Champions in 2001 and the 5A State Semi-Finalist in 2006. They have been the Region I champion two times—2001 and 2006 and were in the Regional Semi-Finals in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2011.

He has a career record of 614 wins, 291 losses and two ties which is a .676 winning percentage. His record at MHS (1996-2013) is 424 wins and 188 losses for a 69% winning percentage. He won is 600th game in 2013 beating Midland Lee 13-0. Coach Russell won the 2001 Texas Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year, as well as winning the 2013 National Federation of State High School Associations Coach of the Year for the state of Texas. According to Baseball America, his 2001 team finished the season ranked number five in the nation in 2001. He is active in the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association where he was the Region I Director from 1999-2000, Director of Team Texas Senior All Star Team form 2000-2002, and the again for Team Texas in 2008-2011 in the Heartland Series. He has also served on the Board of Directors as the UIL Representative from 2011-2013 and is currently the Historian. Coach Russell was inducted into the Sunbelt Classic Hall of Fame in 2012. He also serves on the Baseball America National High School Baseball Coaches Association Region 4 national rankings committee from 2001-2002. He is an officer with the Greater West Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and was the All Star Coach in 2002, 2006, 2008, and 2013.

His playoff record at Midland HS is 64-37 for a .633 winning percentage. Since 1998, Coach Russell has sent 62 players to the college level or professional baseball. Twenty two have received Division I scholarships to Texas A&M, TCU, Texas Tech, Air Force Academy, Army, and the University of New Mexico just to name a few. Fourteen players have gone to a NCAA Division II or III Scholarship or program. Thirty-one players have received a junior college scholarship and seven have gone on play professional baseball. In his spare time, he is an associate scout for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Coach Russell is married to the former MHS journalism teacher, Jill Howbert. He has three children, two stepsons, five grandchildren, Dubya the cat, and Remi the dog. Heather, who is married to ex-MHS pitcher Lee Martin, is currently the CEO of the Martin household. They have two children – Kaden, 6, and Kameron, 3. Jason is a teacher and coach at Melissa High School, and is married to Becca. Aimee, a nurse, is married to Casey Herring. They live in Lindale with their two children, Blakeleigh, 2, and Gunner, 9 months. Andy Hancock, is a free-lance photographer who lives in Indiana. He is married to Maria and they have a little girl, Madeleine, 16 months. Sean Hancock is a welder and lives in Midland.


Bobby Alvarez

Position: Assistant Coach

This is Bobby Alvarez’s 7th year to coach the JV Purple team. Coach Alvarez is in his 24th year of coaching and teaching in the MISD system. He has been an assistant coach for the varsity football team for seven years and is in his fourth year to assist coaching the Bulldog Cross Country team. He was also an assistant basketball coach for three years.

 

Coach Alvarez graduated from Stamford High School in 1988. He attended Hardin-Simmons and completed his Bachelors in Kinesiology at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Prior to coming to Midland High,Coach Alvarez was the athletic director and head coach at San Jacinto Junior High School for four years and served as a seventh and eighth grade coach for twelve years total.

He and his wife, Josie, have two daughters -- Sarah, a Senior at Texas Tech University, and Macy, a Sophomore at Texas Tech.



Scotty Lewis

This is Scott Lewis’ second time to be a part of the Midland High Baseball program. He was the varsity assistant coach from 1994-1996. His last year at MHS was Coach Barry Russell’s first year. He left MHS and went to Cuero High School as the Head Baseball coach. In 1997, Coach Lewis moved to Coahoma for three years leading them to the State 2A Tournament two times. In 2000, he became the head baseball coach at Odessa Permian. In his three years at Odessa Permian, Coach Lewis led the Panthers to the playoffs all three years. He coaches the JV Gold team. 

Coach Lewis attended Central Arizona Junior College where he played baseball and won the NJCAA World Series in 1976. He then attended Baylor University, where he played baseball, and played in the College World Series in Omaha. He graduated from Sul Ross State University. Coach Lewis’ first job was an assistant coach at Western University where the team went to the NAIA World Series in 1981. He left the college ranks and took his first high school position at Marfa High School. In 1977, Coach Lewis was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals. Coach Lewis also had stints in Belton, Alpine, Longview, New Diana and Rockport, where he gave up his beach house to coach at Midland High School. This is Coach Lewis’ 29th year teaching and coaching. He is a Co-Teacher at Midland High School in the Special Education Department.

He has a twenty-six year old son, Logan, a hunting guide/wild game control specialist.


Danny Neighbors

Danny Neighbors is the varsity assistant coach who has been with the Bulldog Baseball program for four years. This is Coach Neighbors’ 3rd year as the varsity assistant where he will work with the pitchers and catchers. He coached the Gold JV team for three years. 

Coach Neighbors is a graduate of Andrews High School and Texas Tech University. This is his 25rd year with MISD and he teaches PE and A+ Credit Recovery at MHS after teaching two years at Midland Freshman. Coach Neighbors is also the varsity football defensive end coach.

His wife, Lisa, is the Executive Director of Elementary Education for MISD. They have a daughter Lexi, a freshman at Texas Tech University, and a son Caden, a 9th grader at Midland High School.
